Baby Girl's dresser

When I was thinking about a color scheme for the nursery, I went looking for pictures of nurseries in my colors so I could get a better visual idea of how the colors would look together. In my searches, I came across this picture:

I loved the idea of a painted dresser as a way to bring in color. And the idea of preferring a second hand dresser because why would I buy a brand new one and then paint it. So my wallet and my dreams were in step for once, and I went on the search for a good dresser. Finally found this one:

It was a good size, and if we decided the painting was too much, it still had a really pretty finish to it. Plus, my favorite part, at the top of the dresser where it looks like moulding is actually two more very squatty drawers that were felt lined--perfect for jewelry and tiny treasures. I thought how much I would have loved those drawers when I was little and seriously they pretty much sold me on the dresser. So, a whole lot of planning and truck borrowing and help and the dresser was moved into the room.  Then, several months later when we were sure we wanted to paint it, more help and the dresser was moved into the garage.

I've never painted furniture before, so I read a variety of tutorials online, figuring I'd go along with the common advice. Then I went to the store to buy primer and the paint guy told me instead of sanding to use a deglosser. I heard "instead of sanding" and said Sure! Since pregnant lady wasn't sure what kind of fumes would come from the deglosser, Mom was kind enough to come over and potentially take one for the team. Wouldn't you know it, the stuff seems to have worked! Rub it on, wait 10 minutes, then paint like normal. And it hardly smelled at all.

A couple coats of primer and we were ready for the real color! Which meant back to the paint store to decide on a color since I couldn't find the paint chip I picked when we started doing her room. So we looked and looked and looked and just couldn't find quite the right color to go with the curtains. Enter helpful employee who offers to color match to the swatch of fabric. That thing is amazing! It is exactly the same color.

Looking at it, we decided not to sand the edges to have the white show through, and instead paint a design on the top and on some of the drawers. Some difficulty putting on the polyurethane, but after reinstalling the hardware (thank goodness we didn't have to replace it!) and moving it back upstairs where it belongs, and it is an entirely different piece! So pleased!

Also, that lamp used to be yellow. And in my nursery. I think the light bulb was in my nursery too. It's... vintage. ;) There are other DIY projects that deserve their own post, just a tiny bit left and they're done!

And, I'm thinking of doing a baby pool, because it's fun to guess when the little one will make her appearance. Simple prize, anyone interested? You'd have to guess three things: the date, the general time of day (morning, afternoon, or night) and whether she or the crib will be here first. Because the crib store called this week and moved back the estimated date again. So glad my OB doesn't do that every time I visit... Anyway, who wants to play When Will Baby Girl Come?
